The first four-page issue of “The Co-Operator” was published on May 25th, 1918 in the interest of the employees of the Barbour Flax Spinning Company. Its purpose was “to print news items of interest to yourselves and to the management, and with your help we hope to make it interesting.” Its Editor suggested that employee contributions for the publication could be deposited in the box at the mill gate or given to the reporter in their department. “The Co-Operator” was issued every two weeks.
Over time, the little publication grew to 12 pages, containing articles about Barbour Mill products, employees and their families, recipes, health hints, and womens news. It also published sports updates for mens bowling and football teams and girls basketball.
The Barbour Mill ran a company store and posted its prices in “The Co-Operator,” suggesting employees leave their orders and pick up their purchases at the end of the workday.
Issues of “The Co-Operator” were discovered among the papers of Thomas McMULLEN. McMullens brother-in-law James GABEBY was employed at the Barbour Mills. “The Co-Operator” collection contains the following issues:
